Devil's Claw

DEVIL'S CLAW - Devil's claw is a plant native to southern Africa. Its name comes from the small hooks on the plant's fruit. The active ingredients in devil's claw are believed to be iridoid glycosides called harpagosides, which are found in the secondary root. The Plant gets it name by virtue of its barbed, fibrous fruit, but the root is the part of the plant used in herbal medicine.

Devil’s claw is an anti-inflammatory and painkilling agent when used in its recommended form. It has also been used in South Africa as an appetite stimulant. The benefits of devil’s claw for specific health conditions are; Arthritis, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Gout, and Tendinitis.

Devil’s Claw reduces blood pressure as it relaxes arterial tension. Since this can reduce the force of heartbeats and slow the pulse, it should be avoided by people who have congestive heart disease. Occasionally, devil’s claw causes mild diarrhea. If this happens, you should take the next dose on an empty stomach. You should not use devil’s claw if you are pregnant or nursing, or if you have ulcers.
